Yasuke Shield Ring with Aya
Yasuke was the name given to a mysterious African warrior who achieved the status of samurai in 16th century Japan, the first foreign-born man to do so. Arriving in Kyoto (the capital at the time) in 1579, he soon became friends with and gained the trust of the powerful ruler Oda Nobunaga, the first of the three unifiers of Japan; Yasuke was part of Nobunaga's inner circle and rode alongside him in battle, attaining the rank of samurai within a year.
